Visiting the historic Buddhist temple of Borobudur was our first stop in Indonesia, which turned out to be a good thing for all kinds of reasons. Indonesia is, of course, quite different to Singapore, and it was very nice to be met at the airport by a driver booked through our hotel. Navigating the Yogyakarta traffic was a fairly eye-opening experience (although it’s actually quite tame compared with some other places), and retreating to a fancy resort hotel softened the culture shock still further.
I’m not really sure why I was so keen to visit Singapore. Family history, the allure of Asia, the Raffles Hotel’s famous Singapore Sling, these all had something to do with it, but even I think twice about travelling half way around the world just to try a cocktail.
In the spring our thoughts inevitably turn to Las Vegas. Not because we like Vegas, particularly, but because Tom’s annual conference visit means an opportunity to take a trip to the South West, and this year was no exception. Continue reading →
Another recent visitor from England saw us hitting the tourist trail with a vengeance. As a first time visitor to NYC she had a long list of must-sees, and we were happy to offer the benefit of our experience of the city too. It was lovely to reconnect whilst seeing the sights, and her interests meant that we had some new experiences as well as revisiting old favourites.
Visitors from England during mid-October (aka peak foliage season) prompted us to put together a plan for a Saturday out of town. In our vision, we would visit pumpkin patches and maize mazes, basking in autumnal sunshine as we admired the blazing colours of the leaves. So naturally it rained.
As regular readers of this blog may have guessed, I get terribly anxious if I don’t have at least one trip to look forward to. When we returned from our summer holiday in early July the prospect of five long empty months until Christmas was just too much to bear, but funds were a little stretched. Thankfully all this long-distance travel is excellent for collecting airmiles and we managed to find some extremely well-timed reward flights to Louisville Kentucky for a long weekend in late October, landing late last Friday evening. Late last July we joined some friends on a weekend trip to the Berkshires, some beautiful hills in Western Massachusetts. Tom enjoyed it so much that he campaigned for another visit this year, and so it came to pass that last weekend saw us hopping in yet another rented car and heading northwards. Continue reading →
